It is worth planning single-family home monitoring from the entrance, gate, driveway and garden, and only then selecting the resolution of the cameras, recorder and disk. A good system is not about buying as many cameras as possible. It is supposed to record the face, car, entrance to the property and the most important events when they are really needed.
The most important information to start with
- A typical house usually has cameras at the entrance, gate, driveway, terrace and garden side.
- A better effect is achieved with fewer cameras placed well than with many cameras installed haphazardly.
- For the home, the most common choice is an IP PoE system with an NVR, a local disk and viewing on the phone.
- Resolution 4 Mpx or 6 Mpx is often enough, but for an entrance, a larger garden and a longer distance, it is worth considering 8 Mpx.
- It is best to plan the cables before the facade, cubes, plasters and attic construction.
Where to start when choosing home monitoring?
Start with scenarios, not with a hardware catalog. Ask yourself a simple question: what do you want to see on the recording if something happens at night, during your vacation or when the courier leaves a parcel at your door?
In practice, four areas are the most important: the entrance to the house, the gate, the gate or driveway and the rear part of the property. Only later are additional spaces added, such as a garage, terrace, garden, side path or technical entrance.

External or internal cameras
In a single-family house, external cameras are most often the most important. They show who came to the door, who entered the property and what was happening near the fence. Internal cameras are used more carefully: in the garage, technical room, corridor or where household members consciously accept recording.
If monitoring is to work discreetly and without conflict with privacy, it is better to start from the perimeter of the building. Well-placed outdoor cameras provide a lot of information before anyone touches the door or window.
What resolution of home cameras?
Resolution must be adjusted to the distance and purpose of the recording. A 4 Mpx camera can be great at the entrance. An 8MP camera will be more reasonable where you want to see more details on a wider scene, such as a long driveway.
- 4 Mpx – a good choice for entrances, narrow passages and shorter distances.
- 6 Mpx – compromise between image detail, price and disk recording.
- 8 Mpx / 4K – it's worth it next to the driveway, garden, wide gate and larger stages.
Color at night, infrared and light on the property
The night vision is one of the most common places of disappointment. During the day, almost every camera looks good. Differences appear after dark: in the presence of car headlights, poor lighting at the gate or wet stones that reflect light.
Cameras with technologies like ColorVu can maintain color images in low light, but still need reasonable lighting conditions. Classic infrared can be effective, but the image is black and white and sometimes it is difficult to recognize the color of clothes or cars.
NVR and disk: why local recording makes sense
Viewing on your phone is convenient, but it shouldn't be the only way to use monitoring. At home, a local NVR with a disk for continuous operation, such as a surveillance class, works best. Thanks to this, the recordings stay with you and the system does not rely solely on the cloud or the memory card in the camera.
The disk capacity depends on the number of cameras, resolution, number of frames, codec, bitrate and whether the recording is to be continuous or after motion detection. Therefore, it is not worth choosing a disk "by eye". It is better to calculate the expected archive time, for example 14, 21 or 30 days.
PoE, Wi-Fi or card cameras
If it is possible to lay a cable, an IP PoE system is often the best choice. One network cable transmits the image and powers the camera. It's more stable than Wi-Fi, easier to service and more predictable after a few years.
- PoE – the best choice for constant home monitoring.
- Wi-Fi – good where it is not possible to run a cable, but requires good range.
- Memory card – it can be an addition, but it will not replace a convenient archive from the recorder.
The most common mistakes when installing cameras
- The camera is mounted too high, making the face difficult to see.
- Too wide a frame that shows everything but no details.
- No image test at night.
- The camera is aimed at strong light, the street or car headlights.
- No spare cables for future expansion.
- The recorder is placed in an easily accessible place.
Home monitoring and alarm, video intercom and intelligent building
The best effect is achieved by combining several systems. Monitoring shows what happened. An alarm lets you know that something is happening. A video intercom helps control the entrance, and gate automation and intelligent building can encapsulate the scenario in one application or one process.
Example? The camera detects movement at the gate, the alarm is armed, and the household member receives a notification. He can check the image, talk on the video intercom and decide whether to react. This is more practical than separate systems that do not know about each other.
Checklist before home monitoring quote
- Prepare a plan of the house or a sketch of the plot.
- Mark the entrance, gate, garage, terrace and access paths.
- Enter how many days of recordings you want to keep.
- Determine whether the cables can be run under plaster, in pipes, in troughs or via an existing route.
- Take some photos of the facade and installation locations.
- Check where the recorder and router can be located.
When is it worth asking for an on-site inspection?
A site visit makes sense when the house is already finished, the area is large, there are unusual distances or you care about aesthetic cable routing. When it comes to a new house, it is worth consulting the monitoring even before the facade and cube are installed. Then the installation is usually cleaner, cheaper and easier to expand.

Is a 4K camera always the best
Not always. A 4K camera provides more detail, but requires more disk space and better conditions. At a short distance, a well-selected 4 or 6 Mpx camera may be more reasonable.
